The Jesus Myth, which follows Professor Wells's earlier, highly acclaimed work, The Jesus Legend (see page 15), contains a new investigation of the historicity of the gospel miracles, a detailed look at the earliest non-Christian testimony to the existence of Jesus, and a provocative discussion of the New Testament Jesus as an ethical guide.   When Jesus is deconstructed and when it becomes clear that the Christ of miracle, mystery, and authority never existed, it is a short step to wondering if the Jesus story as a whole is a myth—something made up, perhaps by a creative school, reflecting both the deepest construct and value of human spirituality. This book is the one that really summed up for me how I felt & feel about the Jesus myth as opposed to the historical Jesus. It strengthened my faith while providing a more scientific outlook on the life, death & resurrection of Jesus the Christ. The story of the resurrection finally made sense after reading this book/5.

Wells' recent book received the usual treatment afforded anyone who contends that Jesus is a myth, pure and simple. Prof. Wells' able work is also denigrated in certain circles because its author is not a "specialist" in the field, a pattern of criticism unhappily utilized even by the late Joseph McCabe as this short work will show. As intelligent beings we desire to know whether this Jesus, whose worship is not only costing the world millions of the people's money, but which is also drawing to his service the time, the energies, the affection, the devotion, and the labor of humanity,—is a myth, or a reality.

In Dr. Gardner's concern with detailing the myth vs. reality in every aspect of Jesus' life, there is a tendency to throw out the baby with the bath water. That being said, his section on Jesus' personality does provide deep insight into what was going on in Jesus' mind, and I wish that section were longer.

I give this book 5 stars/5(13). The Christ myth theory (also known as the Jesus myth theory, Jesus mythicism, or the Jesus ahistoricity theory) is the view that the story of Jesus is a piece of mythology, possessing no substantial claims to historical fact.
